Kallisto (English spelling)

Kallisto (English spelling)
A nymph in Greek mythology. She lived in Arcadia and followed Artemis, spending her days hunting as a virgin. However, Zeus approached her in the guise of Artemis, defiled her chastity, and she became pregnant. This caused the virgin goddess Artemis to become angry and turn her into a female bear. Her son, Arcas, grew up to be the king of a region named after himself, but one day while hunting in the mountains he encountered a female bear named Callisto and tried to shoot her, not realizing that she was his mother. To prevent Zeus from committing the crime of matricide, he turned Arcas into a bear as well, and raised both mother and child up into the sky, making Callisto the Great Bear and Arcas the Little Bear.

In 1979, Voyager 1 and 2 took photographs of its surface, revealing not only the meteorite crater but also a large ring structure similar to the basins of Mercury.
