...The latter corresponds to the archaic word "kani wa" (crab). In the past, birch and cherry trees were confused because their bark was similar, but they were both used as materials for curved objects. Both kaba and "kani wa" are said to come from the Ainu word karimpa (carimpa), which means betrayal of Betula maximowicziana and Ooyamazakura (cherry blossom). [Masa Fukatsu]
