An institute for research into oriental studies established in Saigon in 1898 by P. Doumel, Governor-General of French Indochina. It moved to Hanoi in 1900 and conducted humanities research on Asia in general, with a focus on Indochina. The results of its research were published in the journal "Bulletin de l'École Française d'Extrême-Orient" (abbreviated as BEFEO), which was launched in 2001, and in the form of various reports in book format, all of which were highly praised in the field. After World War II, the headquarters was moved to Saigon, and then, following the dissolution of French Indochina, it is now based in Paris. However, many of the institute's staff are still involved in the care of historical sites in various parts of Asia while simultaneously conducting field research.
