Dyeing using natural plant pigments. The main plant dyes used are indigo, madder, safflower, tangara (dried bark of a plant of the mangrove family), gardenia, turmeric, suoh, caryas, and phellodendron amplexicaule, but cochineal is also used. Different colors are dyed using different mordants. All dyes were natural until the introduction of chemical dyes in the Meiji period. The name "kusakizome" (plant dyeing) was coined by Yamazaki Akira, a dye artist who promoted the revival of hand-woven tsumugi, at his first solo exhibition in 1930 to distinguish it from chemical dyes. It was registered as a trademark in 1932. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
