When the axons of neurons that make up a certain nerve nucleus run together and show a strong tendency to be organized as a group of nerve fibers and are distinguished from the surrounding structures, they are sometimes called nerve tracts (nerve conduction paths or conduction pathways). The concept of a "neural tract" is based on the idea that "groups of neurons with the same connection relationship, and therefore with the same functional meaning, are gathered together."
