Born: October 16, 1907, Aisne [Died] May 12, 1965. An un-French novelist. Studied philosophy at the University of Paris. Participated in the founding of the Surrealist magazine Le Grand Jeu (1925). During World War II he was a war correspondent and then a fighter in the Resistance against the Germans, his experiences being depicted in his first novel Drôle de jeu (45, Prix Interéllier). His other works include Les Mauvais coups (48), a novel that coolly depicts the mechanisms of human desire and sensibility, Beau masque (54), 325,000francs (55), La Loi (57, Prix Goncourt), and La Fête (60). His plays include Heloïse et Abélard (50, Ibsen Prize), and his posthumous publication of Écrits intimes (68), which brought new acclaim to the author.
