Akihabara

Japanese:
Akihabara

A district in the northeastern end of Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. The area is centered around Akihabara Station, which is on the JR Sobu, Yamanote, Keihin Tohoku lines, Tsukuba Express, and Tokyo Metro Hibiya line. In terms of administrative name, the east side of the station is Kanda Hanaokacho and Kanda Sakumacho in Chiyoda Ward, and most of the electronics stores concentrated on the west side of the station are in Sotokanda in the same ward. In 1869 (Meiji 2), a firebreak was established to prevent fires, and in 1870, Akiba Shrine, which was used to prevent fires, was enshrined there, so the area was called Akihabara, which is how the area got its name. In the Edo period, it was a residential area for lower-ranking samurai. In 1890, the Japanese Railway Company opened the station, and in 1928 (Showa 3), the Kanda Fruit and Vegetable Market (closed in 1989) was established adjacent to the freight station on the Tohoku Main Line. After World War II, a black market was established here, and it has since developed into a wholesale and retail district for electrical appliances.

The Akihabara Crossfield, an Akihabara redevelopment project promoted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, was built on the site of the former Kanda Fruit and Vegetable Market. In addition, the Tsukuba Express, which runs to Tsukuba Science City, also starts from Akihabara (opened in 2005).
