An Italian swindler. His real name was Giuseppe Balsamo. After traveling around the Near East, he deceived people by claiming to be a Freemason and repeatedly practicing alchemy and making prophecies. He also called himself a count and frequented high society in London, Paris and other places. However, his fraud and other misdeeds were gradually exposed, and he was imprisoned in the Bastille in 1785, and in 1789 he was declared a heretic in Rome and died in prison. It is unclear whether he was actually a Freemason. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
