Bibio rufiventris

Japanese: メスアカケバエ（英語表記）Bibio rufiventris

An insect of the Diptera family, Pycnonotidae (illustration). The Japanese name comes from the orange-red body of the adult female, but the male is black. Body length is around 10mm. Found from Hokkaido to Kyushu, adults can often be seen in early spring on the forest edges of plains and low mountain areas. Males can be seen flying in swarms on sunny days with little wind. Females often rest on undergrowth within or around forests. The larvae live under fallen leaves in forests or under compost around pastures. They have hair-like protrusions on their bodies and overwinter in groups. [Shinonaga Satoshi]
