Thermistor - Thermistor

A semiconductor device with resistance and temperature characteristics that make it easy to use as an electronic component. They are classified into NTC (negative temperature coefficient thermistor), whose resistance value decreases as the temperature increases, PTC (positive temperature coefficient thermistor), whose resistance value increases as the temperature increases, and CTR (critical temperature resistor), whose resistance value changes suddenly at a certain temperature.

NTC is a composite sintered body of transition metal oxides, mainly manganese, cobalt, nickel, and iron. Like other semiconductors,

In this case, ρ and ρ _a are the resistivity at temperatures T and T _a , and ρ _∞ is ρ when the temperature is infinite. The temperature coefficient α has the relationship α＝－B/T ² , and is one order of magnitude larger than that of metals, with a value of -2 to -7%/℃.

NTC structures include bead-shaped with a diameter of 0.2 to 2 mm, disk-shaped with a diameter of 2 to 50 mm and a thickness of about one tenth of the diameter, washer-shaped with a hole in the center of the disk, rod-shaped with a diameter of 1 to 5 mm and a length of 3 to 10 times the diameter, and flake-shaped with a thickness of 1 to 50 micrometers. Bead-shaped and disk-shaped NTCs are widely used as temperature sensors for home appliances, automobiles, agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, and industrial measurement, taking advantage of their large α. Their small size makes them suitable for measuring small locations and rapid temperature changes, and they can detect temperature changes of 10 ^-4 to 10 ^-3 °C. When a bead-shaped NTC is self-heated by passing electricity through it, a negative resistance characteristic appears in the voltage-current characteristic, and they are used in automatic gain control devices and limiters for communication devices. They are also used as elements for delay operation and surge power absorption, taking advantage of the time delay in self-heating. This negative resistance characteristic varies depending on the wind speed, vacuum, type of gas, and other environmental conditions, and is used as a sensor in anemometers, vacuum gauges, gas analyzers, etc. The flake type is used to detect infrared rays, taking advantage of its small heat capacity.

PTCs are mainly _BaTiO3 -based semiconductors that have been given electrical conductivity through valence control using _Y2O3 and other _materials , and their electrical resistance changes suddenly near the Curie temperature. By replacing barium with strontium or lead, the Curie temperature can be shifted to -50 to -300°C. PTCs are also used as temperature sensors, but their main applications are as delay devices that utilize the time delay of self-heating and the current limiting effect, automatic demagnetizers, and constant temperature heating elements. The most commonly used structure is a disk shape.

CTR is a _VO2 -BaO- _{P2O5 -} based composite oxide sintered body, and by adding oxides of tungsten, germanium, iron, etc., the sudden change temperature can be shifted to 10 to 80°C. Its resistance sudden change characteristic is used to detect abnormal temperatures and as a temperature sensor that operates at a constant temperature. CTR structures include bead type, thick film type, and thin film type.

電子部品として使いやすい抵抗値と温度特性をもった半導体デバイス。温度が上昇すると抵抗値が下がるNTC（negative temperature coefficient thermistor）、温度が上昇すると抵抗値が上がるPTC（positive temperature coefficient thermistor）、およびある温度で抵抗値が急変するCTR（critical temperature resistor）に分類される。

　NTCはおもにマンガン、コバルト、ニッケル、鉄など遷移金属酸化物の複合焼結体で、他の半導体と同様に、
　　ρ＝ρ_∞exp(B/T)
　　　＝ρ_aexp(B/T－B/T_a)
の性質をもっている。この場合、ρ、ρ_aは温度T、T_aにおける抵抗率、ρ_∞は温度が無限大のときのρを表す。温度係数αはα＝－B/T²の関係にあって、金属に比べて絶対値で1桁(けた)大きく－2～－7％/℃の値をもっている。

　NTCの構造には、直径0.2～2ミリメートルのビード形、直径2～50ミリメートル、厚さは直径の約10分の1のディスク形、ディスク形の中央に穴のあるワッシャー形、直径1～5ミリメートル、長さは直径の3～10倍のロッド形、および厚さ1～50マイクロメートルのフレーク形がある。ビード形およびディスク形は、その大きいαを利用して家庭電器、自動車、農畜水産、工業計測用の温度センサーとして多量に使われている。寸法が小さいために細かい場所および早い温度変化の測定に適しており、また10^-4～10^-3℃の温度変化も検出可能である。ビード形NTCに通電して自己加熱させると、電圧‐電流特性に負性抵抗特性が現れることを利用して、通信機の自動利得調整装置、リミッターなどに使われている。また自己加熱に時間的な遅れがあることを利用して、遅延動作およびサージ電力吸収用の素子としても使われている。この負性抵抗特性が、風速、真空、ガスの種類その他の環境条件によって変動することを利用して、風速計、真空計、ガス分析計などのセンサーとしても利用されている。フレーク形は熱容量が小さいことを利用して、赤外線の検出に使われている。

　PTCはおもにY₂O₃などで原子価制御して導電性を与えたBaTiO₃系の半導体で、キュリー温度付近で電気抵抗が急変する。バリウムをストロンチウムまたは鉛で置換することにより、キュリー温度を零下50～300℃に移動させることができる。PTCは温度センサーとしても使われているが、最大の用途は、自己加熱の時間的遅れと電流制限効果を利用した遅延動作、自動消磁装置および定温発熱体である。構造としてはディスク形が一般に用いられている。

　CTRはVO₂-BaO-P₂O₅系複合酸化物焼結体で、タングステン、ゲルマニウム、鉄などの酸化物を添加することによって急変温度を10～80℃に移動させることができる。その抵抗急変特性が異常温度の検知および定温度で動作する温度センサーとして利用されている。CTRの構造としてはビード形および厚膜形、薄膜形がある。
