Gogoshima Island

An island located in central Ehime Prefecture, 2 km west of Takahama Port, Matsuyama City. Its area is 8.47 square kilometers. The former village of Ogoshima was incorporated into Matsuyama City in 1954 (Showa 29). Most of the island is made up of granite from the Ryoke Belt, but the highest point, Ko-Fuji (282 meters), is an andesite head of an old dissecting volcano. The coast is subsidence-type, with many inlets and outlets. In the cove, white drift sand formed by the weathering of granite forms a beach ridge, on which the settlement is located. Most of the hills are orchards, and are highly productive due to the diversification of fruit cultivation, including citrus fruits, loquats, peaches, and kiwifruit. There are observation decks on Takatoyama and Ko-Fuji in the center of the island, from which you can enjoy the view of Setonaikai National Park. The "Funao Dance of Ogoshima Island" is a nationally selected intangible folk cultural property. Ferries run from Takahama Port on the mainland to Yura Port and Tomari Port. Population: 1820 (2000).

愛媛県中部、松山市高浜港の西方海上2キロメートルにある島。面積8.47平方キロメートル。旧興居島村は1954年（昭和29）松山市に編入。島の大部分は領家帯花崗岩(かこうがん)類からなるが、最高点の小富士（282メートル）は古い開析火山の安山岩の岩頭である。海岸は沈降性で、出入りに富む。入り江には花崗岩の風化してできた白色の漂砂が浜堤(ひんてい)を形成し、その上に集落が立地する。丘陵地の多くは果樹畑で、柑橘(かんきつ)類、ビワ、モモ、キウイフルーツなど多角的果樹栽培により高い生産性をあげている。島の中央にある高戸山、小富士には展望台があり、瀬戸内海国立公園の景観が楽しめる。「興居島の船踊(ふなおどり)」は国の選択無形民俗文化財。本土の高浜港から由良(ゆら)港と泊(とまり)港にフェリーが通じる。人口1820（2000）。
