Japanese: カリオタ（英語表記）fish‐tail palm

A medium-sized tree of the palm family, with a single or fascicular trunk. The leaves are bipinnately compound. The pinnae are alternate, fan-shaped or triangular, and truncate at the tip. The leaf sheaths have ridges on the dorsal side and palmate margins. The flowers are unisexual and monoecious. The spadix is usually simply branched, has many branches, and droops, and each inflorescence is spike-like and cauda-like. The fruit is cherry-sized and purple when ripened, containing 1 to 3 seeds. The seeds are slightly globose or compressed, and the endosperm is ductile. Twelve species are found from India to the Malay Peninsula, as well as the Solomon Islands and northeastern Australia.
