Kijigaoka Castle

...It was the base of the Kodama clan, one of the seven clans of Musashi, and medieval warriors from the Sho, Hirukawa, Asami, Shioya, and Mashita clans, who were descendants of the Kodama clan, were based in the surrounding area. Around the Bunmei era (1469-87), Kanto Kanrei Uesugi Akimasa built Kijigaoka Castle (Hachimanyama Castle) on the site of present-day Kodama-cho and placed his vassal, the Natsume clan, there. Later, it came under the control of the Odawara Hojo clan, and the Yokochi clan, vassals of Hojo Ujikuni, lived in the castle. When Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the Kanto region in 1590 (Tensho 18), Matsudaira Iekiyo became the lord of Hachimanyama Castle, but it was abandoned in 1601 (Keicho 6), and thereafter a jin'ya (camp) was established there as land provided for the hatamoto Toda clan. ...

…武蔵七党の一つ児玉党の本拠地で，その流れをくむ庄，蛭川，阿佐美，塩谷，真下らの中世武士が周辺に割拠していた。文明年間(1469‐87)ごろ関東管領上杉顕定が現在の児玉町の地に雉岡（きじがおか）城(八幡山城)を築いて家臣の夏目氏をおいたが，のち小田原北条氏の支配に属し，北条氏邦の家臣横地氏が在城した。1590年(天正18)徳川家康の関東入国に際し，松平家清が八幡山城主となったが，1601年(慶長6)廃城となり，以後は旗本戸田氏の給地として陣屋がおかれた。…
