Agano River organic mercury poisoning incident - Agano River organic mercury poisoning incident
It is generally known as the Niigata Minamata Disease Incident. In June 1965, Tadao Tsubaki of Niigata University announced that Minamata disease patients were occurring in large numbers among fishermen living in the downstream basin of the Agano River in Niigata Prefecture. The cause was said to be methylmercury compounds in wastewater discharged from the acetaldehyde manufacturing process at Showa Denko's Kanose Factory, located some 60 km upstream from the river's mouth. However, Showa Denko fought back, claiming that mercury pesticides stored in a warehouse at Niigata Port Wharf had been swept away by the tsunami during the Niigata earthquake, entering the Shinano River and the Sea of Japan, and polluting the downstream of the Agano River with a saltwater wedge. In June 1967, patients filed Japan's first full-scale pollution lawsuit against Showa Denko.
