[Conflict between Peronists and anti-Peronists]
After Peron resigned, a fierce conflict arose between the Peronists and anti-Peronists, and the political situation became extremely unstable. President Arturo Frondizi, who was democratically elected in 1958 with the support of the Peronists, was overthrown in 1962 by the military, which feared the expansion of the Peronists' power, and in 1966 President Arturo Illia was ousted for roughly the same reasons and replaced by a military government led by General Juan Carlos Onganía. This military government thoroughly oppressed workers and Peronists, and attempted to overcome inflation and develop the economy, but was only partially successful, and amid growing public criticism of the military government, elections were held in March 1973 to transfer power to civilian rule.
