…Interest in elements other than pitch was seen early on in Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring (1913) with its emphasis on rhythm (note value), Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces (1909) with its tone melodies, and gradually became clearer in Webern's Variations for Orchestra (1940) with its serial treatment of note value, and Messiaen's rhythmic canon in Visions of Amen (1943). However, the decisive awareness of these elements came in Messiaen's piano piece Four Etudes of Rhythm, No. 2, Modes of Note Value and Intensity (1949). Here, 36 pitches, 24 note values, 12 attack methods (notes), and 7 strengths are listed, and the piece is composed of combinations of these (for example, the notes always appear only with dotted half note values, forte strength, and tenuto attack). …
