Zhou Fang (English spelling)

Japanese: 周昉 - しゅうぼう（英語表記）Zhou Fang

A Chinese painter from the mid-Tang dynasty. His pen names were Jingxuan and Zhonglang. He was the Chief Clerk of Xuanzhou. He specialized in portraits and Buddhist paintings, and also produced murals for temples in Chang'an and Luoyang. He is said to have originated the Water Moon Guanyin style in Buddhist painting. He was particularly influenced by his teacher Zhang Xuan, and is known for his depictions of aristocrats at banquets and beauties, drawn with simple, beautiful lines. His acclaimed works include "Scroll of a Maid Holding a Fan" (Palace Museum, Beijing) and "Scroll of a Maid Holding a Hairpin" (Liaoning Provincial Museum).

中国，中唐の画家。字は景玄，仲朗。官は宣州長史。人物，仏画を得意とし，長安，洛陽の寺院壁画の制作も行い，仏画では水月観音図の形式を創始したといわれる。ことに師である張萱 (ちょうけん) の影響を受け，簡潔で美しい描線によって描かれた貴族遊宴図や美人図で著名。伝称作品に『揮扇仕女図巻』 (北京，故宮博物院) ，『簪花仕女図巻』 (遼寧省博物館) などがある。
