A 13th century Indian book on music theory. The author, Śārṅgadeva (1210-47), was born into a family of court physicians whose grandfather had moved from Kashmir to Devagiri (now Daulatabad), which was under the rule of the Yadava royal family in the south. As such, he was not unrelated to the tradition of Kashmir aesthetics led by Abhinavagupta and others. The book consists of seven volumes, and its objectives are largely the same as those of academic books of the time: escaping suffering, maintaining dharma, attaining fame, and attaining liberation.
