An evergreen perennial plant of the orchid family. It grows on trees and rocks in mountainous areas from central Honshu southward, and is also found in mountainous areas of the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan. It is also cultivated on tree staghorn fern for ornamental purposes. The stems grow in clusters, are fleshy and cylindrical, about 20 cm tall, with prominent nodes. The leaves grow alternately in 2-3 years, and form sheaths at the base that encase the stem. They are lanceolate, leathery, dark green, and glossy. In summer, short branches emerge from each node at the top of old stems, and two flowers are produced each. The flower stalks are about 3 cm long and white or pale pink. The tepals are broadly lanceolate with pointed tips, and the lip is ovate. The whole plant, dried before flowering, has long been used as a tonic or stomachic.
