Takehara Salt Fields

Takehara Salt Fields
The Irihama salt fields were built in Takehara, Aki Province (present-day Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture) during the Edo period. Part of the reclaimed Oshingai area was used for salt fields from 1646, and engineers were invited from Ako to create a trial salt field. Construction continued in 1650 and 1652, and the salt field area reached 60 cho 9 tan. New salt fields were built in 1725, 1780, and 1833, and by the beginning of the 18th century, the field produced 250,000 to 280,000 bales (5 to bales), and the silver it earned from sales exceeded 1,000 kan. During this time, a salt field riot broke out in 1759, led by upper-class salt workers, who demanded a wage increase, and in 1827, lower-class salt workers planned to demand a wage increase by abandoning salt burning for 20 ken. The introduction of coal-fired firewood was delayed due to opposition from villages that had been supplying firewood, but was fully implemented in 1818. This local technology was introduced to the provinces of Bingo and Iyo when salt fields were developed.
