A play by German poet and playwright Schiller. First performed in 1801. This work dramatizes the legend of Joan of Arc, who saved France from the invasion of England at the end of the Hundred Years' War. When Orleans is besieged by the English army, Johanna (Joan), a farmer's daughter from the countryside, is inspired by the Virgin Mary and given the mission to save her country from peril and place Charles on the throne. She repels the enemy and brings victory to her country, but falls in love with a British officer she meets on the battlefield and loses her spiritual strength. The girl, torn between her noble mission to save her country and her worldly love, finally frees herself from all worldly desires and ascends to heaven in glory. Schiller transforms Joan of Arc into an innocent maiden who grew up in the great outdoors.
