This was the largest of the many peasant revolts that occurred in Anatolia from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century. At that time, as the Ottoman Empire's timar (military fiefdom) system became unstable, local leaders began to seize state land, heavy taxes, and law and order became chronic. As a result, peasants and nomads who were driven off their land rose up in revolt near Maraş in southeastern Anatolia in 1598 under the leadership of Kara Yazıcı, a former member of the Imperial Guard (Şipaği), and showed signs of taking control of central Anatolia. Kara Yazıcı's sudden death scattered the rebel army, but peasant revolts continued to break out in other areas, leaving Anatolia in ruins.

16世紀末から17世紀初め，アナトリアで頻発した農民反乱のうち最大のもの。そのころ，オスマン帝国のティマール(軍事封土)制の動揺に伴い，地方有力者の国有地簒奪，重税，治安の乱れが慢性化し，このため土地を追われた農民･遊牧民は，近衛騎兵(シパーフ)出身のカラ･ヤズジュKara Yazıcıを指導者として，1598年南東アナトリアのマラシュ近郊で蜂起，アナトリア中央部を制圧する勢いをみせた。カラ･ヤズジュの急死により反乱軍は四散したが，農民反乱は各地に続発し，アナトリアは荒廃した。
