A town in Esashi County in northern Hokkaido. It occupies mountainous areas upstream of the Tonbetsu River. Dairy farming is carried out in the lowlands along the river, and potatoes are also grown. Timber production is also abundant, and together with agriculture, it is one of the town's main industries. Limestone is distributed throughout the town, and there are limestone caves.
