Port of Oran Incident

Port of Oran Incident
On July 3, 1940, the Royal Navy attacked and destroyed the French fleet at anchor in Mers-el-Kebir, a naval port west of the port of Oran in Algeria. When Germany invaded France in June of that year, the main French fleet took refuge in Mers-el-Kebir. Recognizing the imminent and grave danger that the fleet would fall into German hands and be used to attack the British mainland, Britain demanded that the French fleet commander either join Britain as an enemy against Germany, or, if he did not join, go to Britain under British supervision, or, if that was not acceptable, scuttle the fleet. However, when both of these requests were refused, Britain destroyed the French fleet by force.
