A son born in Egypt to Joseph, the son of Jacob, the patriarch of Israel (Genesis 41:48-52). His descendants formed the tribe of Ephraim, the largest of the 12 tribes of Israel. Their territory was the fertile region west of the Jordan River in central Palestine, with Shechem as its center. The name Ephraim is said to have originated from the Hebrew word for "rich" when Joseph named his son (Genesis 41:52).
