An old town in Shimotsuga District, southern Tochigi Prefecture. The Uzuma River flows south through the center, and rice fields are open everywhere except for the hilly area in the west. It borders Tochigi City to the north, and is served by the Tobu Railway Nikko Line and the Kita-Kanto Expressway. The town produces strawberries, rice, and wheat, and greenhouse horticulture is thriving. It was once a production area for taiman (fish). Kassenba in the south was a former post station on the Nikko Reiheishi Kaido road. In March 2010, it merged with Tochigi City, Shimotsuga District Ohira Town, and Fujioka Town. 30.52 km2 . 栃木県南部,下都賀郡の旧町。中部を巴波(うずま)川が南流,西部の丘陵地を除き,水田が開ける。栃木市の北に接し,東武鉄道日光線,北関東自動車道が通じる。イチゴ,米,麦を産し,施設園芸が盛ん。かつてはタイマの産地であった。南部の合戦場(かっせんば)は日光例幣使(れいへいし)街道の旧宿駅。2010年3月栃木市,下都賀郡大平町,藤岡町と合併。30.52km2。1万3565人(2005)。
