Omotesenke Fuhakuryu

Omotesenke Fuhakuryu

A school of tea ceremony founded by Kawakami Soju (1779-1844). Succeeding Kawakami Soju (1763-1809), a disciple of Kawakami Fuhaku, the founder of the Fuhaku school, and the tea master of Lord Arima of Kurume, Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture), Soju served Lord Arima, instructed Yanagiwara ware, and left the tea tradition in Ashikaga, Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture), thus laying the foundations for the Kawakami Sojun family. His successor, Shishi Sojun (1810-75), became the second head of the Omotesenke Fuhaku school. The third head of the school, Renshin Sojun (1838-1908), made an effort to collect tea utensils and was also skilled in appraising them, and his disciples included such great connoisseurs of modern tea ceremony as Magoshi Kasei, Masuda Don'o, Masuda Koen, Shikimori Kagyu, and Yasuda Shosai. A succession ceremony for the fifth head of the school, Sojun, was held in 1953 (Showa 28). He is currently the eighth head of the school and is based at Kyūan in Koenji, Suginami Ward, Tokyo.
