Chemical formula: CuI. Only the compound with oxidation number I is known. Colorless solid, specific gravity: 5.63, melting point: 605°C, boiling point: 1290°C. When an alkali iodide is added to an aqueous solution of divalent copper ions, copper(I) iodide precipitates. An oxidation-reduction reaction occurs and iodine is also produced. 2Cu 2+ +4I - -→2CuI+I 2Therefore , copper(II) iodide cannot be obtained. The crystal structure is zincite. Its solubility in water is 0.42g/100ml (25°C), making it practically insoluble in water. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
