A general term for machines that spin wool, cashmere, mohair, etc. into yarn. There are worsted and woolen machines. In woolen spinning, the emphasis is on mixing fibers of different colors and types evenly to make thick yarn from short fibers. Thin slivers or rovings are made on a carding machine, and then spun into yarn on a spinning frame. Rags and lint are often recycled, and a de-piller that untangles the fabric and yarn, and a cleaning and carbonizing machine are used to turn cotton and other materials into charcoal and remove them. In worsted spinning, many machines such as gills and combers are used after carding to pull the fibers parallel and uniformly. British-style machines are used for thick, long hybrid wool, and French-style machines are used for thin, short Merino wool, as well as American-style and hybrid machines.
