Calathea - karatea

A foliage plant of the family Ardisiaceae (APG classification: Ardisiaceae). Its Japanese name is Himebasho. Like the genus Maranta, it is appreciated for its beautiful leaf colors and patterns. The two genera are often confused, but they can be distinguished by the different flower structures. There are more than 100 species distributed mainly in tropical America and Africa. Representative varieties include the following. Lancifolia, formerly known as Insignis, has elongated, upright leaves with dark green arrow feather patterns and dark reddish purple undersides. Leopardina has pale green, oblong leaves with dark green arrow feather patterns and is also shiny, and is also known as Bugue. Makoyana leaves are broadly elliptical, with pale yellow-green upper surfaces with dark green arrow feather patterns and purple-red undersides with the same pattern as the upper surfaces. Roseolineata has elongated leaves with reddish linear patterns. Sanderiana has rounded leaves with similar patterns, and the undersides of both are dark reddish purple. Zebrina has large, oblong leaves with velvety surfaces and dark green arrow feather patterns. Similar genera include Ctenanthe and Stromanthe. For cultivation, place in a greenhouse or in a bright shaded area indoors, keeping the temperature above 12-15°C in winter and keeping it slightly humid. Propagation occurs in June and July by dividing the plant.

クズウコン科（APG分類：クズウコン科）の観葉植物。和名ヒメバショウ。マランタ属と同じく葉の美しい色彩と模様を観賞する。この両属はよく混同されるが、花の構造が異なることで区別される。熱帯アメリカを中心にアフリカに100種以上分布する。代表的品種に次のようなものがある。ランシフォリアはこれまでインシグニスとよばれたもので、葉は細長く直立し、濃緑の矢羽根模様が入り、裏面は暗赤紫色。レオパルディーナは淡緑色、長楕円(ちょうだえん)形の葉に濃緑の矢羽根模様が入り、さらに光沢があり、ビューグの名でもよばれる。マコヤナの葉は広楕円形で、表面は淡黄緑色で、ここに濃緑の斑紋(はんもん)が矢羽根状に入り、裏面は紫紅色で表面と同じ模様。ロゼオリネアータは細長い葉に赤みのある線状模様が入る。サンデリアーナは丸みのある葉に同じような模様が入り、いずれも葉裏は暗赤紫色である。このほかゼブリナは大形で長楕円形の葉の表面がビロード状で、暗緑色の矢羽根模様が入る。これと近似の属にクテナンテ、ストロマンテなどがある。栽培は、温室か室内の明るい日陰に置き、冬は12～15℃以上を保ち、すこし湿りぎみに管理する。繁殖は6～7月、株分けによる。
