Spine - Vertebral column; spine

Spine - Vertebral column; spine
Same as the spinal column. One of the internal skeletons of vertebrates, it is the axial skeleton of the body. It consists of many vertebrae that are aligned vertically from the skull. There is intervertebral cartilage between the vertebrae, which allows the body to bend. During development, bone tissue gathers around the notochord, but in cyclostomes, only a few pieces of cartilage form along the notochord. In cartilaginous fish, it remains cartilage throughout life, while in larger animals, it forms ossified vertebrae. The number of vertebrae varies by species. In mammals, the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and caudal vertebrae are further divided, and the appendicular bones are attached to these. The spinal column also protects the spinal cord that runs through its dorsal interior.
