《Memories》

《Memories》

...His next film, Crankville (1922), was based on the novel of the same name by Anatole France (1903), and was praised as a bridge between German Expressionist films and the "poetic realism" of French films of the 1930s. It was also highly praised by director DW Griffith, known in America as the "father of cinema." He then made Avalanche (1923), which depicts the psychological relationship between a boy and his stepmother, set in a remote village at the foot of the Alps; A Glimpse (1924), a romantic film adaptation of "unanimist literature" based on an original screenplay by Jules Romains, about a boy wandering around in search of a woman in a photo shop; Thérèse Raquin (1928), based on a novel by Emile Zola; and in 1928, he became a French citizen, but was forced to marry Robert de Flers and Francois Schmidt. His satirical film Les Gentlemen (1928), based on the comedy of Six de Croissants, was banned for criticizing the dignity of parliament and the cabinet (it was lifted in 1929), and in despair he went to Hollywood, where he made Greta Garbo's last silent film, The Kiss (1929), and the German version of Garbo's film Anna Kriti (1930). However, he was unable to adapt to Hollywood and returned to Japan in 1931. His films The Foreign Legion (1934), co-written with fellow Belgian screenwriter Charles Spaak (1903-75) and starring his wife Rosée, Hôtel de la Mimosa, and La Cité des Beaux-Arts (1935) are not only representative works of French cinema in the 1930s, but are also counted among the works that adorn the history of world cinema. However, La Cité des Beaux-Arts was banned by Goebbels after the Nazi invasion, and Feder was forced to take refuge in Switzerland during the war.
