Japanese: 生野[町] - いくの
Ikuno [town] - Ikuno
An old town in Asago County, central Hyogo Prefecture. It is located in the Chugoku Mountains, and is served by the Bantan Line. Ikuno, the center of the city, prospered since ancient times due to the Ikuno Silver Mine, and was the site of a magistrate's office during the Edo period. During the heyday of the Keicho and Genna periods, the area produced 1,600 to 1,700 kan of silver per year. Since 1896, it has been run by Mitsubishi Metal Mining, and mainly copper and tin have been mined, as well as zinc, gold, silver, and tungsten, but due to a sharp decline in ore reserves, the mine closed in March 1973. In April 2005, it merged with Wadayama Town, Santo Town, and Asago Town in Asago County to become a city, called Asago City. Area: 112.01 km2 . Population: 4,960 (2003).
