A Russian-born researcher of ancient history, he studied medicine at Moscow University, and after studying Freud, he has lived in the United States since 1938. His book Worlds in Collision (1950) examined the myths and legends from around the world and ancient records to prove that a great comet that entered the solar system caused great disasters on the entire Earth during the historical era, sparking a whirlwind of both positive and negative opinions. Although his claim that the great comet in question was absorbed into the solar system as Venus only a few thousand years ago is unreasonable, some have praised his work for shedding light on the relationship between major events in ancient history and celestial anomalies.

ロシア生れの古代史研究家。モスクワ大学で医学を修め，フロイトの研究を経て1938年以降はアメリカに在住する。著書《衝突する宇宙》(1950)は，太陽系に侵入した大彗星が歴史時代にはいっていた地球全体に大災害を与えたことを，世界中の神話伝承や古記録から検証したもので，賛否両論の渦を巻き起こした。問題の大彗星がわずか数千年前に金星として太陽系に取り込まれたという主張は無理があるものの，古代史に残る大事件と天体異変との関連に照明をあてた研究として評価する向きもある。
