…Typical athletic events include track and field, swimming, wheelchair basketball, fencing, and archery. An international sports competition for people with intellectual developmental disabilities was held on a separate international scale, known as the Special Olympics, but since the 1992 Spanish Games it has been called the Paralympics for the mentally retarded. In Japan, the International Sports Games for the Disabled (Paralympics) were held in Tokyo in 1964, and a national sports competition for the physically disabled has been held every year since 1965.
