McCarthy, JR

...refers to the attacks on political opponents and their methods used by Republican Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (1909-57) in the early 1950s in the United States under the pretext of anti-communism. In February 1950, McCarthy, who had a personal ambition to be re-elected to the Senate in the next two years, made a bombshell statement that a large communist spy network had been formed within the State Department under 20 years of Democratic administration, and that its members were still involved in foreign policy.
