Dead water - Shisui

Japanese: 死水 - しすい

(1) A region of almost stationary fluid that occurs behind an object placed in a current. (2) Also read as "shinimizu," this phenomenon occurs when the propulsive force of a ship is wasted as energy to generate internal waves, causing the ship to stop. In high-latitude oceans and areas with an abundance of fresh water supplied by rivers, where a layer of low-salinity, low-density water spreads over the high-salt, high-density open ocean water, internal waves are likely to occur, and therefore the phenomenon of dead water is also likely to occur.

（１）流れの中に物体をおいたとき，物体の背後に生じる流体がほとんど静止した領域。（２）〈しにみず〉とも読み，船の推進力が内部波を起こすエネルギーとして消費され船が止まる現象。高緯度の海や，河川から淡水の供給の多い海域で，塩分が濃く密度の大きい外洋水の上に塩分が低く密度の小さい水の層が広がっているところでは内部波が起こりやすく，したがって死水現象も起こりやすい。
