Seven of these species breed. The common tern Sterna hirundo (English name: common tern) (illustration) breeds mainly in the northern temperate zone of Eurasia and North America, and migrates to the waters of southern Africa, South Asia, Australia, and South America in winter. In Japan, they are migratory birds, with many passing through during the spring and autumn migration seasons.
