As a profession, a jockey is someone who rides racehorses in races, and all countries require a license from a designated organization. In Japan, the license is given by the Japan Racing Association in the case of central horse racing, and by the National Association of Local Horse Racing in the case of local horse racing. In order to be eligible to take the exam, however, there are certain conditions, such as a certain period of training or stable work experience. In principle, jockeys sign a riding contract with a trainer, and their income consists of a riding contract fee, training riding fee, riding allowance, and bonus (5% of the winnings). In Europe and the United States, amateur jockeys (especially in steeplechase races) are allowed, and the success of female jockeys has been attracting attention in recent years.

職業として，競馬に出走する競走馬に騎乗する者をいい，定められた団体による免許を必要とすることはどの国でも共通している。日本の中央競馬では日本中央競馬会，また地方競馬では地方競馬全国協会がそれぞれ行う免許試験に合格し，免許を受けた者 (期間1年) と規定されている。ただし，受験資格として，一定期間の講習または厩舎実務を受けるなどの条件がある。騎手は原則として調教師と騎乗契約を結ぶが，収入は騎乗契約料，調教騎乗料，騎乗手当，進上金 (入着賞金の5%) などから成っている。なお，ヨーロッパ諸国やアメリカなどではアマチュア騎手 (特に障害競走 ) の存在が認められており，また婦人騎手の活躍も近年話題を集めつつある。
