An ancient Indian thinker from the 6th to 5th century BCE. Dates of birth and death unknown. Considered an agnostic and skeptic. A contemporary of Shakyamuni, he was one of the free thinkers who rejected the values of traditional Brahmin culture. In Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures, he is transliterated as Sanjuyibiralibhi. He is said to have lived in Rajagriha, the capital of the Magadha Kingdom, and Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, who later became disciples of the Buddha, were his students. His ideas can be inferred from sources in Buddhist scriptures such as the Sramanagara Sutra, which treat him as a heretical theory that should be rejected (the Sixty-two Views and the Six Heretical Teachers).
