...A cold-tolerant perennial plant of the Asteraceae family, this is a typical bulbous flower (illustration) that is widely used for flower beds, cut flowers, and potted plants. It grows to a height of about 30cm to 2m, and has a tuberous root underground (illustration) similar to a sweet potato. It sprouts only where the tuberous root attaches to the stem, and there are no buds on the fleshy enlarged part. The leaves are green, sometimes purple-brown, and arranged in three whorls when opposite, and are pinnately compound with sawtooth edges. The stem is jointed and hollow inside. The flowers are heads of many tubular flowers with ray flowers called petals, stamens, and pistils, just like chrysanthemums, and bloom intermittently from early summer to late autumn at the ends of the main stem and side branches. ...
