A special vocabulary and idiom used by prostitutes in the brothels of the Edo period. Also known as village accent or brothel language. It started in Shimabara, Kyoto, then moved to Yoshiwara, and was established around the Meiwa and An'ei periods (1764-1781) by incorporating rokuhōkotoba and other dialects. It is said to have been used to hide the accent of the prostitutes' home country. Examples include arinsu (I have), wachiki (I). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
