A village in Abuta County, Shiribeshi Subprefecture, southwest Hokkaido. Population 2,649 (1995). The village occupies the southern foot of Mt. Yotei, spreads across a plateau surrounded by Mt. Shiribetsu at the eastern end, and is mostly volcanic ash. The central settlement is near the confluence of the Makkari River, which flows west through the center, and the Minamibetsu River, a tributary. Buses run from JR Kutchan Station and other stations. Settlers arrived from Kagawa and Miyagi prefectures in 1895, and development progressed rapidly thereafter. Demand for starch increased before World War I, and potato production flourished. 北海道南西部,後志(しりべし)支庁虻田郡の村。人口2649(1995)。村域は羊蹄山南麓を占め,東端の尻別岳などにはばまれた台地上に広がり,火山灰地が多い。中心集落は中央を西流する真狩川と支流南別川の合流点付近にあり,JR俱知安(くつちやん)駅などからバスが通じる。1895年香川・宮城両県から入植者があり,以後急速に開拓が進んだ。第1次大戦前からデンプンの需要が高まり,ジャガイモ生産が盛んに行われた。
