Nevers (English spelling)

Japanese: ヌベール(英語表記)Nevers
Nevers (English spelling)
The capital of the Nièvre department in central France. It is located in the northern part of the Massif Central (Mountain Central), at the confluence of the Loire and Nièvre rivers. During the Roman province period, a fortress was built and it was called Noviodunum. In the Middle Ages, it prospered as the capital of the Duchy of Nivernais and a river port city. In the 16th century, it came under the control of the Italian Gonzaga family, during which Italian pottery was introduced. Today, it is an industrial center, with textile and chemical industries thriving. It produces faience (a type of pottery) and has a ceramics museum. On the hill are the Palais des Nivernais (15th-16th century, now the courthouse), the Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-et-Saint-Juliette (11th-16th century), and the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne (1063-97). Population 43,889 (1990).
