Afro-American culture is mainly carried by people of black descent from Latin America and is often said to be a "mixed culture." This reflects the fact that Afro-American society, found mainly in northeastern Brazil, the Guianas, and the Caribbean, is a "mixed society." In other words, unlike in North America, interracial mixing is commonplace here, and for example, intermarriage between whites and blacks has given rise to mixed races such as mulattoes and mamerucos, and intermarriage between Indians and blacks has given rise to mixed races such as sambos and maroons.
