A snake of the Viperidae family of the Squamata class of the Reptilia class. A venomous snake native to North America that belongs to the Viperinae subfamily of the same family. It is found in the eastern United States and is divided into five subspecies depending on the habitat. It is 60-90 cm long and up to 1.3 m long, which is rather small for a venomous snake native to North America. The back of the body varies from yellowish brown to reddish brown, and has a dozen or so broad band-like spots bordered with black, but the pattern varies depending on the subspecies. It lives in rocky forests from hills to mountains, and is highly venomous but mild in nature. It is ovoviviparous, giving birth to 2-6 baby snakes in the summer. It feeds on lizards, frogs, small mammals, and insects. [Takahiro Matsui] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
