Blood Island

…Hematopoietic tissues are found in various organs. In humans and other mammals, in the early stages of development, cells derived from the mesenchyme form blood islands in the yolk sac wall of the embryo, from which red blood cells arise. In humans, hematopoiesis in the yolk sac begins around embryonic day 10.
