An ancient Greek colony (apoikia) in southwestern Sicily. Today it is Agrigento, Italy. It was founded around 580 BC by citizens of Gela, and flourished under the tyrants Phalaris and Theron in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. The ruins of the Archaic temples on the Acropolis belong to this period, and the philosopher Empedocles was also from this city. In Roman times it was called Agrigentum, and although it suffered a great blow in the Punic Wars, it was rebuilt and has survived to the present day as one of the major cities of Sicily. However, its area is not as large as it was in ancient Greece. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
