A Turkish shadow play that was introduced from Egypt in the 16th century. A white curtain is stretched and lit from behind. A paper-cut-style puppet made of painted camel hide is supported on a pole between the light source and the curtain, and is performed to the accompaniment of music, recitation, and singing. It is performed on the night of festivals and weddings. The play features the typical Turkish townsman Karagöz and the know-it-all Hadjibat as main characters, and is humorously depicted by interweaving witty puns, satire, and wordplay into the mismatched conversation between the two.
