Polish poet, novelist, and essayist. His real name was Lesman. He was born in Warsaw to a middle-class Jewish intellectual family. He spent his childhood in Ukraine and studied law at a gymnasium in Kiev. He began publishing poetry around 1900, and was one of the founders and stage director of the Warsaw Art Theatre. Influenced by the Polish modernist art movement "Young Poland," he perfected his own style and poetic realm, and is considered one of the most representative poets of modern European literature. His poetry collections include The Orchard at the Forking Roads (1912), The Pasture (1920), and Forest Happenings (1938), as well as the fairy tale-like prose The Legend of Sesame (1913).
